============================================================== The Tragically Hip - 1991.03.01 - The Town Pump, Vancouver, BC ============================================================== Source: Internet Stream -> Audacity (WAV) -> Edit -> FLAC - No EQ used - Dropouts and errors fixed, volume of show was normalized - Broadcast Date: 2023.05.20 Show Notes: The Hip are really on their game for this one at The Town Pump in Vancouver, BC. If you look at the actual setlist, located in the CD artwork folder, you'll see that they call it The Town Dump; A term that was used affectionately by the locals to describe one of Vancouver's hottest live venues at the time. You'll also note that they mislabeled the date as '90, instead of '91. That one's a mystery ;) The band wastes no time and rips through a set of prime Road Apples and Up To Here cuts. Apparently the crowd was a little too into it, as they had problems with people getting crushed at the front (unfortunately not uncommon during early 90's Hip shows). Gord and another person tried multiple times between songs to calm them down: "There's some people up here that are gettin' squished, goddamn it. So have a good fuckin' time but don't squish people. Just relax, just fucking relax." - Gord D The venue seemed to remind Gord of a Sizzler's, and he cracked a few jokes about it throughout the night. Other highlights include some great new rants in Highway Girl and New Orleans is Sinking. Although there is some tape hiss, the sound mix is quite good, and it does well to capture the energy of this performance. Unfortunately, the recording is incomplete. The actual setlist from the night shows the songs that didn't make it onto the broadcast. They are also noted on the tracklist below. Why were they cut? Hard to know for sure, but it's possible there was a tape flip during Fight, thus they cut it out. A similar thing happened for the 1991 Hengelo show. As for the end songs, they could have been cut from the broadcast by either Sirius for time reasons, or possibly the band's tape ran out? The Hip shared a picture of this show's setlist on their social media. On close examination and image manipulation, it was discovered that there was a picture on the reverse side. After a bit more digging, we found that it matches up with a promotional band shot from 1989! Both sides of the setlist are shown on the inside cover of the CD art and are also available seperately in the this package, along with the reworked image we used to identify the promo pic. The setlist also has a song written down as "Make It." Although we can't be 100% sure without hearing it, we are going to assume it was short for "I'll Make Love to You Anytime" by JJ Cale. They were playing that song during this time period, so it fits.
