A similarly effective icebreaker for an American visiting Canada is, "I saw The Hip at a bowling alley in Omaha." This is what it sounded like, 25 years ago tonight, when The Hip played to a crowd of a few hundred (Ranch Bowl capacity was reportedly 400) while promoting their then-current release, Day for Night. A month earlier, they headlined arenas across Canada. A month later, they opened for Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Sandwiched in between were a few weeks of intimate shows throughout the American Midwest - a rare chance to see these Canadian icons on the same stages as unknown local groups. Only a few recordings are known to exist from The Hip's brief tour of small US venues in March/April 1995. On this capture, you'll hear a slight hint of distortion during loud moments and a few occasional talkers. Otherwise, this is as close as it gets to being right there in a small room with one of the Great White North's all-time most beloved bands. Enjoy.
