====================================================================== The Tragically Hip - 1998.10.31 - Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, Atlanta, GA ====================================================================== Source: SiriusXM Internet Stream -> Audacity (WAV) -> Edit -> FLAC - EQ used to balance the recording - A few pops and clicks removed - Date Recorded: 2023.10.02 Show Notes: Here we have the latest offering from the SiriusXM live show archives. Until now, this show has only been in circulation as an audience recording. This new and complete soundboard recording is a welcome upgrade to a fine show. According to a few sources, Gord D came out to start the night dressed as Fidel Castro, complete with beard, glasses, hat and a Cuban cigar! He then threw his hat and cigar into the audience and the band played Grace Too. The Castro costume makes another appearance at the start of the second encore, Chagrin Falls, where it sounds like he gives his cigar away (again): "I know some people kinda like this stuff, so here you go, here's a... (heh) ...little piece of Cuba for ya." - GD Robbie was apparently dressed in all red; a sight to behold, I'm sure. Many people in the audience were also dressed up, which only added to the festive vibe of the show. "It's strange how such a beautiful day can give way to such a night of... evil." - GD The Derek Trucks Band is said to have implored the crowd to stay to see the great band from Canada. Despite this, a number of people still left before The Hip took the stage. Phantom Power was well represented with eight songs making it onto the setlist. Other noteable performances are the nine-plus-minute versions of At The Hundredth Meridian and New Orleans Is Sinking. Lots of song and poem bits are flying around in these versions. In fact, this whole show has little bits and pieces that eventually morphed into songs like Insomniacs and Songwriters Cabal. It's great they found a home! Special thanks to Rich for sharing his great photos from that night. Check out Alan Moore's cool fan show review from back in the day, included in this package. Unfortunately, like the other Sirius shows, the high end suffers from the low bitrate and streaming compression effects. Cool Tidbit: When you read the show review by Alan, you'll note that the show he said he was listening to in his car was the Pittsburgh Metropol show from 1998.10.02. That's the very show The Hip chose to put in the 2023 PP Box Set! Venue Notes: There's a lot of confusion surrounding the venue name "Roxy" in Atlanta. This is because there have been three (3) separate buildings which have gone by that name. The venue for this show was originally known as the Buckhead Theatre, built in 1930. In 1987, it was renamed "Buckhead Roxy", in hommage to the original Atlanta Roxy Theatre (movie palace, in the same part of town, built in 1926 and demolished in 1972). In 1989, the Buckhead Roxy started being known as just "The Roxy". Then in 1992, it was renamed "Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre" until it closed in 2008 after Live Nation (and Clear Channel) ended their lease. After a couple years of renovation, it reopened under the original "Buckhead Theatre" name in 2010. In 2017, Live Nation resumed control of Buckhead... but around the same time, they also opened ANOTHER venue, calling IT the "Coca-Cola Roxy", close to a new stadium (about 8 miles away)! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roxy_Theatre_(Atlanta) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckhead_Theatre https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coca-Cola_Roxy https://cinematreasures.org/theaters/10331/photos
