The last few years I haven't had any problems getting all my gear in and down at the soundboard. I usually set up a stand at about 12 feet, run 6 channels and monitor my levels all while also recording video. The sound crew has always been amazing, and super helpful. Unfortunately, my biggest fear for these final concerts came true as I had a VERY hard time getting my equipment in. I finally met up with Ryan the current production manager and he had no idea about tapers and told me he's spent his whole career protecting bands from people like me. Sighhh. It took several hours (good thing I got there early) of convincing, checking, questioning and double checking but finally he got the OK from his boss and brought my gear into the venue and left it at the SBD area. A half hour later I was with my gear setting up. Once I was finally set up and ready to hit record, I received several visits from different layers of security asking me what I'm doing. Of course they made a stink and caused more layers of security to show up. One guy even told me "don't go anywhere" in a threatening manner as he went off to check something. I found that quite amusing as I certainly wasn't going anywhere and even if I wanted to, it'd take me quite some time to tear down and grab all my gear and escape! Obviously that wasn't my intention. Never did see that guy again. The band started right on time (20:30) and I had hit record on all my digicorders 5 minutes earlier. I checked my levels and everything seemed fine. I was in the zone, happy I was getting the recording and emotional due to the sad circumstances with this being the last tour of this great Canadian band. All of a sudden I had the production manager, several security guys and even Gord's private bodyguard Rick (or his twin brother) was there all asking me what's going on and trying to ruin my recording. The production manager told me I have to lower my stand (what??) and while I was occupied talking my way out of being kicked out, he attempted to lower my stand himself. He was trying to remove a pre amp I had taped to the stand so he could lower it. I ran up to him and told him not to touch my gear and realizing I was walking on a thin line agreed to lower my stand - whatever it took to not hit stop on my digicorders. He insisted that I lower it so it wasn't higher than the cameraman's head who was directly in front of my mics. This meant that my mics were pointing at the cameraman. When I first got there, Ryan had given me the option of being in front of the cameraman but with my mics lower than the camera or behind the cameraman where I could raise my mics to full height. Obviously I chose behind specifically so I could get my mics high. I was so furious but lowered my stand by a few feet and then got sent to my seat. Thankfully, the recordings turned out well but it could have been a real disaster. Prior to the next night's show, in response to all the hullabaloo I had apparently caused, The Tragically Hip's Facebook page put out the following press release: "The Man Machine Poem Tour returns for a second show in Vancouver tonight! Doors open at 6:30 and the show starts at 8:30 sharp. Please note throughout the Man Machine Poem Tour, concert attendees are welcome to shoot photographs and take video footage from their seats with hand-held, non-professional cameras (No DSLR cameras or cameras with removable lenses). Audience members are also permitted to record audio of the show, but from the position of a ticketed seat only and any equipment being utilized must not obstruct or inhibit the experience of any other patron. We are unable to accommodate requests for audio, video, or photographs from the sound board unless accredited through media organizations. Thank you and enjoy the show!" The show was terrific even with all that. It was a very strange feeling knowing that this was the second to last time I'd ever be seeing this quintessential Canadian band live. I don't think it really hit me during the performance. Gord seemed to be in good shape but definitely appeared a little more mellow than usual. His voice was good but there was a definite intangible difference from his usual performances. The audience was loving, sang along with Gord and clearly appreciated being able to see the band one more time. It was quite a night. I hope you enjoy this recording as much as I enjoyed the show. Mastering Notes: The right channel of Source #1 (Busman's) was unusable, so I copied the good left channel over the right to create a dual mono file to use as part of the matrix. ********************************************** Fight the Loudness War! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war No compression was used in the post-processing of this recording to preserve it's dynamic range, listenability and authenticity. This recording will naturally sound much better cranked up loud with quality headphones!
